About | Biography

 Jim Mills was most recently Vice-President Product Development at dormakaba, where he has held senior management positions for nearly 20 years. He has managed organizations of over 200 people and $25M budget focused on the development and market release of new products and solutions which incorporated electro-mechanical devices coupled with software solutions. 


Throughout his career he has held various design and manufacturing engineering, product management and project management positions. Over the last few years, he was concurrently Site Lead on the Montreal facility, a 600 employee site combining manufacturing, R&D and all business functions. Jim successfully led the $8M site relocation project, requiring extensive leadership, coordination and communication in order to drive it to a successful outcome.


Jim Mills holds a bachelor’s degree from McGill University in Mechanical Engineering (B. Eng), Robotics & Automation option. He has had additional training in Lean, Agile, SAFe, S&OP, as well as a wide variety of executive level training such as on communications, business ethics, risk and liability management. 


Jim Mills is a member of the Quebec Order of Engineers (OIQ). He is an advisory board member, supporting a small business achieve its’s ambitious growth targets through the Cercle GDP. He is also an active member of an innovation managers peer group, the Cercle des Leaders d’Innovation (Quebec).

Some notable accomplishments:

  •  Managed site relocation project into a renovated 160,000 sq.ft. space. Successfully completed the project over 18 months, moving 600+ employees, continuously running a 3 shift operation with negligible impact to customer on-time shipments. Leveraged the move to instill a culture change across the site through relentless communication. 


  • Negotiated a $3M subsidy from Investissement Québec for the relocation project, assuring the relocation project’s viability. Also initiated other Québec tax subsidy and grant processes (C3i / IDCI) with expected recurring annual impact of over $1M. 


  • Negotiated development & partnership programs with Apple and several others


  • Managed & remediated cyber security issues, including field work for software and equipment upgrades at 15,000 customer sites (several million doors). 


  • Active participation as a technical lead in several mergers and acquisition projects: (dorma + kaba, Stanley, Keyscan) 


  • Led multidisciplinary teams of mechanical, electronics, embedded, software solutions and cloud service engineers, to collaborate on a customer centric consolidated product development management process.


  • Introduced the SAFe agile business methodology across all development and product management groups with quarterly planning by the entire team for increased product release predictability and transparency to the Sales organization.

 

  • Co-inventor on 5 different patent families
